Overview

Surface finish of a job plays an important role in the manufacturing industry. Third year Mechanical Engineering students in their machine shop (workshop) class manufacture five to six (5-6) jobs and final year students fabricate a pump (manufacturing different parts and assembly). All these jobs are to be tested to understand its quality to conform to customers’ needs.

This may be achieved, tested and modified with the help of state-of-the-art measuring tools. In this context, it may be mentioned that the said surface tester instrument may be used to test the above-mentioned requirements in the Metrology Laboratory. At the same time, the same instrument may also be shifted to the workshop, and it can be used at the place of machines to test the surface roughness at different stages of manufacturing.

Benefits to students and JU

Every year nearly 300 undergraduate students will benefit from this new surface testing equipment.

The surface measuring instrument is a very old one and not working well. Replacement of this is one of the steps for upgradation of the Metrology and Metallographic Laboratory.
