Overview

Visually impaired individuals share the same information needs as those with sight. For sighted individuals reading newspapers, or accessing electronic content online are easy sources of information. Visually impaired people seek relevant information in accessible formats. Technological advancements have the potential to mitigate challenges faced by visually impaired people. However, the digital world also presents its own set of obstacles. Websites and applications were developed without accessibility in mind. Ensuring that technology is inclusive and user-friendly is crucial to bridging the digital divide for the visually challenged. Education and employment opportunities will be limited for visually impaired individuals, perpetuating a cycle of dependency. The lack of accessible educational materials and inclusive learning environments hinders their academic progress. Similarly, discriminatory practices in the workplace create barriers to employment.

Jadavpur University has a longstanding commitment to providing equitable education and equal opportunities to all students, including those who are challenged physically. The university currently serves between 120 to 150 visually impaired students which is estimated to increase to 250 students in a few years. In 2018 an Accessible Library for 40 students was started - equipped with audio books, Braille books, and other resources. However, advancements in technology necessitate an upgrade to these facilities to continue meeting the educational needs of visually impaired students effectively.

Main objectives of the project:

1.    Enhance Physical Infrastructure: Improve the physical layout to ensure better accessibility and usability for visually impaired students.
2.    Upgrade Equipment: Procure and install modern equipment designed for visually impaired users, including Braille printers, screen readers, and other assistive devices.
3.    Update Software: Integrate the latest software solutions for educational support, including advanced text-to-speech software, accessible learning management systems, and other relevant applications.

Project Activities:

  1. Detailed assessment of current facilities and identification of specific needs.
  2. Finalization of the need for equipment and software and procure the same at most competitive cost from reputed vendors.
  3. Rearrangement of the library space to improve accessibility and installation of new equipment and software.
  4. Training for library staff on the use of modern technologies.
  5. Conducting workshops for students to familiarize them with the new facilities.

Project Implementation:

The project will be a Rotary Global Grant Project between Rotary Club of Belur in Kolkata and International Partner Rotary Club of Danville, CA, USA. The supporting partners are Rotary Club of Calcutta Chowrenghee and Rotary Club of Calcutta South City Towers. GJUAF will be an important collaborating partner to the project, raising Funds and supporting with expertise, experience and monitoring.

Benefits to students and JU

The library can accommodate 250 students. Once completed, the library will benefit not only JU students but also visually impaired students from other universities.

The upgraded library will better serve current students and accommodate those from other universities in Kolkata after project completion.

Upgraded facilities such as toilet improvements, soundproof audiobook cubicles, and tactile tiles installation; equipment such as Braille printers, screen readers, and other assistive devices; and software for educational support will enhance students’ experiences and knowledge. The project will also undertake training of the library staff and workshops for the existing students to familiarize them with the new facilities.
